Information about Swedish Snus

What is snus?

Snus is a tobacco product basically made of finely ground tobacco,, saline and sodium. We offer two types of snus: Loose and Portion, with “Loose” being exactly what its name says – the loose, formable tobacco product, and “Portion” being basically the same product, comfortably portioned in pouches. Snus is available in many flavors, such as: the traditional, classic tobacco taste, peppermint, licorice, spearmint, berries, pepper and citrus, herbs, elder and many more. Apart from the different tastes and flavors, you can also have your pick from different strengths, ranging from low levels of nicotine to extra high ones. The highest level right offered right now is 17 mg per gram of snus.

Swedish Snus as we know it today was, of course, created in Sweden in the early 19th century. In fact, Ettan was registered in 1822, making it the oldest snus still available today. Back in the beginnings, snus was only available in one version: Loose. Pre-portioned snus (Portion) was invented comparatively late, in 1974.

How to use snus?

To enjoy loose snus, you will have to knead a compact pinch (a small ball) with your fingertips, which you then place behind your upper lip. The size of this pinch is of course completely up to you, but let us tell you that it is much easier to start small! If you find that it is difficult for you to form your pinch (or “prilla”, as we say in Sweden), you can use an Icetool or a Prismaster, to form and then insert the pinch behind your lip.

Portion snus is the easiest way to use snus - you just take a pouch and place it behind your upper lip. Portion snus comes in different sizes:  large (the most common), mini, medium, long or maxi. Then there are different kinds available with regard to how they release taste, nicotine and moisture, with the main two kinds being Original and White Portion. Why choose snus instead of other tobacco products?

Snus is a very discreet tobacco product, which you can use wherever you are. It doesn’t smell much – the can emits a mild fragrance when you open it, but that’s about it. As opposed to dip or chew, you do not have to spit! You do not need a lighter and people around you will not be bothered by smoke. Just place a “prilla” or pouch behind your lip and enjoy!
